Famed as the
author of the
Pañcatantra
The hugely popular collection of tales, mostly animal
fables, composed in prose and poetry, titled
Pañcatantra. This work has had an unprecedented
impact on early scholars as it travelled to Persia,
Arabia, Greece, Italy, Germany and other parts of
Europe. Through its various cross-border adaptations
and translations as it travelled orally, the Pañcatantra
has had a profound influence on world literature and
remains to date the most popular work of literature
among storytellers.
Many scholars suggest Kashmir as the
birthplace of Viṣṇu Śarmā.
